Secondary Characteristic Classes and the Euler Class

چکیده
We discuss secondary (and higher) characteristic classes for algebraic vector bundles with trivial top Chern class. We then show that if X is a smooth affine scheme of dimension d over a field k of finite 2cohomological dimension (with char(k) 6= 2) and E is a rank d vector bundle over X , vanishing of the Chow-Witt theoretic Euler class of E is equivalent to vanishing of its top Chern class and these higher classes. We then derive some consequences of our main theorem when k is of small 2-cohomological dimension. 2010 Mathematics Subject Classification: 14F42, 14C15, 13C10, 55S20

Vanishing of Universal Characteristic Classes for Handlebody Groups and Boundary Bundles
Using certain Thom spectra appearing in the study of cobordism categories, we show that the odd half of the Miller-Morita-Mumford classes on the mappping class group of a surface with negative Euler characteristic vanish in integral cohomology when restricted to the handlebody subgroup. This is a special case of a more general theorem valid in all dimensions: universal characteristic classes ma...
متن کاملAlgorithms to compute the topological Euler characteristic, Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class and Segre class of projective varieties
Let V be a closed subscheme of a projective space P. We give an algorithm to compute the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class, and the Euler characteristic of V and an algorithm to compute the Segre class of V . The algorithms can be implemented using either symbolic or numerical methods. The algorithms are based on a new method for calculating the projective degrees of a rational map defined by a h...
متن کاملFiniteness Obstructions and Euler Characteristics of Categories
We introduce notions of finiteness obstruction, Euler characteristic, L2-Euler characteristic, and Möbius inversion for wide classes of categories. The finiteness obstruction of a category Γ of type (FP) is a class in the projective class group K0(RΓ); the Euler characteristic and L2-Euler characteristic are respectively its RΓ-rank and L2-rank. We also extend the second author’s K-theoretic Mö...
متن کاملCounting Complexity Classes for Numeric Computations. III: Complex Projective Sets
In [7] counting complexity classes #PR and #PC in the BlumShub-Smale setting of computations over the real and complex numbers, respectively, were introduced. One of the main results of [7] is that the problem to compute the Euler characteristic of a semialgebraic set is complete in the class FPR R . In this paper, we prove that the corresponding result is true over C, namely that the computati...
متن کاملA direct algorithm to compute the topological Euler characteristic and Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of projective complete intersection varieties
Let V be a possibly singular scheme-theoretic complete intersection subscheme of P over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Using a recent result of Fullwood (“On Milnor classes via invariants of singular subschemes”, Journal of Singularities) we develop an algorithm to compute the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class and Euler characteristic of V . This algorithm complements exist...
